The telco world is a conservative one, deeply rooted in structured, long-term standardization processes, which lay the foundation for proprietary implementations. Open Source Software is often perceived as quite the opposite: a highly dynamic eco-system in which open implementations define de-facto standards and drive adoption. It is hence no surprise that as open source software became a natural part of telco products over the past decade, this transformation has resulted in a quite a learning curve for telcos. In this presentation, Gunnar and Georg will describe Ericsson's journey over the past decades towards the establishment of an Open Source Program Office. They will outline the challenges that come with a large global R&D environment spread over multiple business areas. Further, they will outline the paradigms that drove the uptake of open source in the telco domain. In addition, they will talk about how Ericsson is striving towards implementing best practices for working with open source and the need to collaboratively drive projects to production. Finally, they will summarize the lessons learned and give an outlook to address consumption at scale.
